Carbon Monoxide — Know the Signs
Carbon monoxide has no smell and no colour. It comes from fuel-burning appliances that aren't venting properly — furnaces, water heaters, fireplaces, stoves.
Symptoms to watch for:
Headache
Dizziness or confusion
Nausea
Unusual tiredness
Symptoms that improve when you leave the house and come back when you return
If your CO alarm sounds, or anyone has these symptoms:
Get everyone outside immediately, including pets.
Call 911 from outside.
Don't go back in until emergency services clear it.
In Ontario, a working carbon monoxide alarm near all sleeping areas is required by law in homes with a fuel-burning appliance or an attached garage. If you don't have one, get one today — they cost less than a service call.

While You Wait
Check your thermostat batteries and that the furnace switch — it looks like a light switch, usually near the unit — is on. Check the breaker. A clogged filter is a common cause; if it's grey, replace it.
If none of that works, don't keep resetting the unit. Repeated resets can lock out the control board and make the repair more expensive.
Check the breaker and the filter. If the outdoor lines are iced up, shut the system off at the thermostat and let it thaw. Running an iced system damages the compressor.
Water leaking
Shut the system off. Put a bucket or towels under it. Don't run it until it's been looked at.
If it's a gas tank, check whether the pilot is out. If it's electric, check the breaker. If you see water pooling at the base of the tank, shut off the water supply to it and call — a leaking tank doesn't get better.
